Learning SEO is in high demand these days.

Why?

Because it’s relevant for all sorts of professions, besides SEO itself. The job descriptions of writers, designers, developers, and many more professions all include SEO in 2019. It has become a universal skill.

While it’s easy to collect 100 articles about SEO and completely overwhelm someone new to the craft, it’s harder to select 5 articles that bring it home. That’s exactly what Cyrus did, for which I’m very grateful.

So, without further ado, here’s Cyrus Shepard:

The best articles to learn SEO (by Cyrus Shepard)

When you first start learning SEO, it is typically confusing and overwhelming. The problem is not a lack of information, but too much of it. Google uses 100s of signals to rank websites, so how do you know where to begin?

When I was starting out, I remember stumbling upon one blog post that made it all “stick.” It was a lightbulb moment, and that single post turned me into an SEO for life. That post was Rand Fishkin’s All Links are Not Created Equal: 10 Illustrations on Search Engines’ Valuation of Links. If you’re interested in SEO, you should 100% read it.

Today, most of what I do is teach SEO to others, and I try to keep it simple. So here I’ve gathered a few of SEO blog posts that all make it “click.” I’m not saying you can completely learn SEO by reading a few posts—but if you could—these would be the ones.

1. Master Keyword Research in 7 Days There is no bigger name in Keyword Research than Nick Eubanks. Nick famously make 100s of thousands of dollars selling this course as an ebook. Today he offers it free.

2. More than Keywords: 7 Concepts of Advanced On-Page SEO Rand’s post certainly inspired me, and a few years later I was writing my own posts for the Moz Blog. This is one I was most proud of and explains concepts of on-page optimization that are still relevant today.

3. Time to Long Click You can’t understand SEO unless you understand how Google employs user-engagement metrics. This post by AJ Kohn explains it more clear and scientifically than anyone else.

4. Link Building Strategies: The Complete List It’s hard to rank without links. This list was originally compiled by Jon Cooper (and earned a ton of links itself) and is now maintained by Brian Dean, himself a master of SEO and link building.

5. 10 Illustrations of How Fresh Content May Influence Google Rankings Another shameless plug here by yours truly. This is one of the most popular posts I’ve ever written and explains various relevance signals Google may employ.

6. The Technical SEO Renaissance: The Whys and Hows of SEO’s Forgotten Role in the Mechanics of the Web Once you get the basics down, this post by Mike King is one of the best on advanced, technical SEO.

7. How to Increase Website Traffic by 250,000+ Monthly Visits Finally, to pull it all together, you need a strategic approach using effective tactics. Ross Hudgens show you the exact process his agency uses to successfully build traffic for some of the most recognized brands on the planet.
